Tilles Park in Ladue
St. Louis County in the State of Missouri owns and operates Tilles Park in Ladue, a suburb in the western part of St. Louis. The park was originally known as the Rosalie Tilles Memorial Park to commemorate the mother of Cap Tilles, founder of the park. In 1932, businessman and philanthropist, Mr. Cap Tilles, donated a piece of land to St. Louis to be used as a municipal park. In 1938, the Works Progress Administration began the construction of the park’s facilities and completed the first phase by World War II. A survey revealed that 8 in 10 people who accessed the park were residents living within the county another survey found that citizens needed more open park space. Consequently, in 1956, the park was sold to developers, but the Saint Louis County Council got involved in the process and a vote to save it from destruction carried the day. It was then bought back for $429, 625 and the park was re-created.
