The St. Louis Walk of Fame was founded by Joe Edwards, a developer and owner of BlueBerry Hill bar and restaurant as well as other establishments along the walk. It honors notable individuals from St. Louis, Missouri state, who made significant contributions to the heritage and culture of the U.S. Inductees were either born and raised in St. Louis or spent a significant part of their creative years there. Inductees’ contributions or achievements can also be in virtually any area, including music, acting, entertainment, sports, art, journalism, architecture, science, education, literature, and broadcasting among others.

As of April 2019, the walk had over 150 brass stars & bronze plaques, with an inscription of the name and summary of the inductee’s accomplishments or achievements. The stars and plaques set into the sidewalks run along a one-kilometer (2/3-mile) stretch of Delmar Boulevard, within the Delmar Loop region, spanning the border between the City of Saint Louis and University City.

History of the Walk of Fame (St. Louis)

Joe Edwards founded the walk whose initial stars and plaques were first installed in 1989. Musician Chuck Berry, poet T. S. Eliot, dancer and choreographer Katherine Dunham, aviator Charles Lindbergh, bridge builder James Eads, baseball player Stan Musial, playwright Tennessee Williams, newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer, and ragtime composer Scott Joplin. For the next four years, ten more inductees were selected each year to help establish the walk. Starting in 1994, however, no more than 3 inductees have been selected and awarded in any given year. Moreover, in May 2008, Cedric the Entertainer got the first star and plaque in St. Louis city’s portion of the loop. The expansion of the walk, as well as that of the Delmar Loop boundaries has occurred eastward as Edwards continues to put more funds in the re-development of the area.

Embedded in the sidewalk is a succession of brass stars, each accompanied by a bronze plaque. Each set commemorates the achievements and even life of an exceptional individual associated with St. Louis.
