St. Louis Galleria Mall in Richmond Heights
St. Louis Galleria Mall is a one-of-a-kind shopping mall that gives you the shopping experience of a lifetime. Located in Richmond Heights in the State of Missouri, the massive shopping mall occupies the original site of the Westroads Shopping Center. In 1984, the property was sold to Hycel Properties who demolished most of it and only left the Stix, the North Wing with Walgreens. Today, the site is where the elegant and magnificent St. Louis Galleria stands tall. Dillard’s later acquired the Stix chain and expanded it during that time.
Economic Upheavals
St. Louis Galleria has suffered some economic turbulence, most notably the 2008 recession. In 2006, Nordstrom publicized their intention to launch a store at the Galleria Mall but later delayed the activity, citing the poor performance of the 2008 economy, which saw retail giants like Mark Shale and Jimmy’s wind up their business operations. 2008 was a rough time for Richmond Heights as well, as the city’s largest taxpayer accounting for 50% of the total sales tax, could not maintain its sales tax remittance to the City Council. The revenue dropped from about $10 million in 2007 to roughly $ 9 million in 2008, representing a whopping 10% decrease in sales tax revenue.
However, 2008 was not the only difficult year for St. Louis Galleria Mall, as it took another major hit in 2017 when there were intense protests after a Caucasian police officer was acquitted, under unclear circumstances, while facing charges that included the shooting of Anthony Lamar Smith, a young African American. The protest ended with the arrest of 22 people. Besides the incident, there was also a case involving the stabbing of a customer of the mall by an unidentified individual in June 2018.
