St Louis County Justice Center in Clayton MO
The Saint Louis Justice Center is located at 100 South Central Avenue, 100 South Central Avenue, Clayton MO 63105, within the popular “Buzz Westfall Justice Center” and approximately 13 km (8miles) from downtown Saint Louis. The facility has a holding capacity of 1, 400 inmates of both sexes. The direct-supervision facility holds or detains both adults and juveniles awaiting trial or already serving their county sentences. The American Correctional Association (ACA) issued the ALDF accreditation to the county jail and the county justice center is the only jail in Missouri to hold this accreditation. Launched in March 1998, St. Louis County Justice Center replaced the jail constructed in the 1949 Saint Louis County Courthouse building as well as the Adult Correctional Building in Chesterfield, MO. Later in 2004, the “Buzz Westfall Justice Center” was rededicated to the jail facility.
The jail in the Saint Louis County Justice Center features 960 cells with a capacity to hold 1, 400 inmates when fully packed. The Justice Center also boasts 9 levels, although not all the floors are reserved for inmates, as some of them serve the jail administration, Public Defender’s office, Prosecutor’s office, County Police Fingerprint Unit, Public Works Offices, and Fugitive section. Each floor is segmented into 4 units with 48 cells each and each floor dedicated to inmates has a capacity of 301 inmates.
The St. Louis County Jail cells have no bars but instead, the floor plans have been laid out to resemble a dormitory. The “pod” at the front of the unit features a sally port door, with both an outer and inner door. A permanent staff member is employed to control the outer door and man a desk placed in the convergence area of the floor. On the other hand, the housing unit officer is responsible for manning the inner sally port. Once one gets through the doors, he or she is led to a double-tiered great-room. The table area is adjacent to the sally port and is a place for inmates to use their rec time for playing games and also as their dining area. A TV area is located beyond the area and is lined with plastic recliners. Here, the inmates can enjoy 2 flat-screen TVs and watch several channels. The officer’s podium is located near the rear of the pod and the officer is expected to be always near the podium because it has the facility’s computer and control panel to unblock the doors within the pod.
St. Louis County Justice Center houses the Saint Louis County Jail and features several floors, some of which are dedicated to inmates. The facility is not only a detention center for adults and juveniles awaiting trial but also home to individuals serving county sentences. The facility holds an accreditation from the ACA and has been operational since its establishment in 1998. Not all floors are dedicated to inmates, as some are reserved for various departments and offices.
