Main Street Historic District in St. Charles MO
Also known as the St. Charles Historic District, the Main Street Historic District in St. Charles is located in St. Charles County, Missouri. It forms the site where the initial European settlement occurred on the Missouri River. This is also the first site where Lewis & Clark’s journey of exploration began. The initial state capital of Missouri and more than a hundred other historic buildings can be found in the district. The first listing of the district on the National Register of Historic Places took place in 1970. This included 63 other contributing buildings occupying a 47-acre area. Later, the district was increased three times.
The Newbill-McElhiney House and the First Missouri State Capital Buildings were included in the original separate NRHP listing. In 1987, this district was expanded to accommodate a Greek Revival specialty store building. Three years later, 13 more contributing buildings were added to the district, which included a post office, the Old City Hall, the St. Charles Odd Fellows Hall, and other buildings of the late 19th and 20th Century Revivals.
