All About the Lewis and Clark Boat House and Nature Center

The Lewis and Clark Boat House and Nature Center is conveniently situated beside the Missouri River, specifically at Bishop’s Landing in St. Charles, MO. This educational facility features historic exhibits associated with the Lewis and Clark expedition, including the Missouri River Ecosystem. If you’re interested in the Boat House, you can find it on the lower level, as it is home to the full-scale replicas that the Corps of Discovery and Lewis & Clark used. Some members of the St. Charles Discovery Expedition volunteered and built the boats, which were then used in the re-enactment of the Lewis & Clark journey in the recently concluded Bicentennial. Also in this display are the two dugout canoes, white pirogue, red pirogue, and the keelboat. The larger boats travelled the Mississippi, Missouri Rivers, and Ohio from Elizabeth, Pennsylvania to Great Falls, Montana.

To gain access to the Lewis & Clark Museum on the upper level of this Boat House, you can use an elevator or take the stairs. Some of the numerous museum exhibits include dioramas demonstrating highlights of the Native American displays, Lewis & Clark Expedition, and several Missouri River habitats run into in the course of the journey. The best part is that the museum tour is mostly self-guided and you have all the time to experience nature on your own terms. Visitors get an informational brochure that has various activities for virtually all ages. “Missouri River Walk”, which is the museum’s artwork, remains the state’s largest indoor mural. As a visitor, you can get a feel of archaic St. Charles with 4 half-scale buildings highlighting architectural styles and designs of the 18th and 19th centuries.

There are numerous habitats on the ground close to the Boat House. The Walk of Discovery is also home to plants that are native to the state of Missouri at the time of this iconic and historic museum. You’ll also find small garden plots with a wide range of crops, flowers, and herbs. The nature trail also winds through a woodland region and numerous plants and animals find a home in a typical wetland marsh. For animal lovers and enthusiasts, there is a chance for you to observe geese, ducks, deer, herons, and other wildlife visiting the nearby woodlands, and this all depends on the time of day and time of the year. These animals also visit the nearby river and wetlands. Moreover, depending on river and weather conditions at various times of the year, there can be great photo-session opportunities to help capture some of the most memorable moments with family and loved ones. Book lovers are also not left out, as the Trading post, which is the museum shop, features a range of book selection together with interesting and unique gift items you can use to surprise your friends, colleagues, or members of the family. They form some of the most creative gift ideas for those who love reading books or are still in school. The museum classroom is also available upon request to cater to some small meetings and gatherings, receptions, or other related events during or business hours. All you have to do is get in touch with the museum administration and inquire about how they can make it happen for you and your team.

Therefore, for one of the most interactive and hands-on exhibits in Missouri, you might want to visit the Lewis & Clark Boat House. You’ll experience an amazing journey you can only live to tell your grandchildren and the future generations.
